Executive Summary
COVID has left many people unable to leave their homes with much more time on their hands than they are accustomed to. To fill the time, many have turned to trying new hobbies although it can be expensive to invest in the materials and challenging to know where to start. COVID also limits the opportunities to leave and purchase products in-store. Happy Hobbies provides individuals with a way to try new activities without having to leave the comfort of their own homes. Happy Hobbies is a subscription box that provides individuals with the materials to try new activities and beginner instructions that correspond. Individuals can try new activities without having to fully commit.
Problem Statement
According to bizjournals.com “six out of 10 Americans did pick up something new to do in their free time during the pandemic to battle boredom or make money on the side.” Many people are faced with extra free time, unlike anything they have had before, and are turning to hobbies to fill the time. The goal of Happy Hobbies is to provide consumers with a way to try new hobbies without ever having to leave the house or end up with pesky extra materials they will never use. People use hobbies to aid with mental health and if Happy Hobbies can help just one person with that, it will be worth it. Everyone deserves to find a fun interest they enjoy.
Target Audience
Happy Hobbies is primarily targeted at people between the ages of 25 and 45. They have a full-time job but because of COVID they are restricted to their homes and cannot partake in their usual activities. With this new time on their hands, they are looking to stay busy but don't exactly know where to start. They are optimistic and willing to try anything.
Description
Happy Hobbies is a subscription box that can be ordered online or through the app. There will be several different levels and options for consumers to choose from. The 2 main factors that will affect the levels will be experience level and frequency of boxes. The experience level will be divided into 3 levels, beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Although the box is targeted toward individuals who want to experience new hobbies, after a period of receiving the beginner boxes they may want to challenge themselves and move up boxes. The levels will increase in difficulty and skill so it is highly encouraged to start with the beginner box. The intermediate and advanced will differ from the beginner box because it will not have as many options for the surprise aspect and will be limited in frequency because of the difficulty of the tasks. The frequency is dependent upon the consumer's choice as well as what is offered for that particular difficulty.
Here are my ideas for the various levels, frequencies, and options:
I listed ideas of various hobbies that could be considered for the boxes in my sketches but to reiterate, subscription boxes could be based on crochet/knitting, painting, pottery, woodworking, creative writing, jewelry making, calligraphy, quilting, and magic tricks. Each box would have its own unique set of materials that the consumer can keep and reuse. Beginner boxes provide materials for one individual and one activity. Besides the materials included for the activity, an instructions booklet will also be included that has diagrams and directions. One unique quality will be that the booklets will have QR codes and links to videos made by Happy Hobbies staff so that users can follow along if that is what works best for them. Happy Hobbies would most likely be U.S.-based to start with hopes to branch out internationally.
